Frequently asked questions
How did you get into glass?
My journey into glass started with beading, a traditional craft of South Africa where I was born and lived in Cape Town until I was nineteen. Art and craft is definitely a way of life in Cape Town and there were many amazing shops selling beads. I visited regularly and could not resist buying these beautiful glass beads to make my own beaded jewellery designs on a part time basis. Years later I decided to take a one day course in glass bead making, but it turned out that the course was teaching a completely different technique and that was glass fusing! A serendipitous mistake because twenty odd years later I am lucky enough to be running my own business creating jewellery and artwork in fused glass.
How do you make your glass?
Fused glass is a process where glass is layered and heated in a kiln to a temperature where the glass melts and the layers fuse together. I use powdered and pieces of glass to paint or print onto a base layer of glass to create my bird designs which are then fused together in the kiln. All my glasswork is digitally annealed and cooled for strength and safety.
Will glass colours fade in the sun?
Glass will not fade or tarnish in the sun or wet conditions.
can I put my glass bird outside?
My work is made with the intention to hang in the home but you can hang them outside as long as you hang them where they will not knock into anything else. You will also need to check the string regularily.
Where do I hang my glass bird?
Glass is delicate so you always need to make sure that my birds are hung where they will not knock against each other or anything else. If hung in the window make sure they are high enough and out of the reach of playful creatures etc. More display ideas here.
